Doing so will save time on both sides and significantly streamline the application process.
Mr. Siegert offers four options for thesis supervision, all of which are open for application at any time:
1st Option:
" General application "
— Apply for a thesis without any preferation for a particular topic
("general application")
Preparation effort:
low
"General Application" — An option requiring minimal preparation on your part. You may apply for a thesis without any particular topic preference — Mr. Siegert will then suggest suitable topics based on your background and interests.
Write an e-mail to Mr. Siegert and provide the following information:
a. Your "general application" for any topics in the research areas of Mr. Siegert
b. Precise your suggested timing of the commencement
c. Give some data about your study programme and your personal level.
2nd Option:
" Announced Topics "
— Apply for an announced topic
(see topics list)
Preparation effort:
low - medium
"Announced Topics" — An option requiring relatively little preparation. You may apply for a topic Mr. Siegert has currently announced on the Topics page.
Steps:
Choose 1 or max. 2 of the available topics outlined on the topics page (here).
Write an e-mail to Mr. Siegert and provide the following information:
a. Justify and demonstrate your interest in the research topis
b. Precise your suggested timing of the commencement
c. Give some data about your study programme and your personal level.
3rd Option:
" Propose Your Own "
— Propose you own topic
Preparation effort:
medium - high
"Propose Your Own" — If you wish to propose your own topic, an initial literature review and identification of a potential research gap and research question are expected. You should also be familiar with the theoretical frameworks already used to investigate your area of interest.
Steps:
Review the current research literature to identify a noteworthy research gap.
Formulate a research gap and research question(s) based on your reviewed research literature (e.g., you can examine published literature reviews and papers and their discussion/future research sections).
Write an e-mail to Mr. Siegert and provide the following information:
a. Justify and demonstrate your interest in the research topic
b. Provide an outline of your literature review and the research gap you
have identified.
c. Precise your suggested timing of the commencement
d. Give some data about your study programme and your personal level.
4th Option:
" Corporate Partner "
— Suggest your (own) topic in
cooperation with a corporate partner.
Preparation effort:
high
"Corporate Partner" — If you wish to carry out your thesis in cooperation with a corporate partner, please note that your corporate partner must grant permission for the results of your thesis to be used for scientific purposes — in anonymised form.
Steps:
Identify an interesting corporate partner
Identify a current research topic, gap, and question that can be carried out with this partner.
Arrange a supervision arrangement with this partner (e.g., a written confirmation that this partner is willing to support you in your thesis and provide you with the necessary access to employees and/or data)
Please get in contact with your corporate partner and get a confirmation that the data and results of your thesis can be used in an anonymized form for scientific purposes
Write an e-mail to Mr. Siegert and provide the following information:
a. Justify and demonstrate your interest in the research topic
b. Provide an outline on your aspired research topic, gap, and question
c. Provide a brief outline of your corporate partner and contact details of
your supervisor
d. Provide a confirmation that the data and results from your thesis may
be used in an anonymized form for scientific purposes
e. Precise your suggested timing of the commencement
f. Give some data about your study programme and your personal level.
